Messi was influential as Barcelona brushed aside Stuttgart at home
Lionel Messi scored twice as holders Barcelona swept aside Stuttgart to reach the last eight of the Champions League with a 5-1 victory on aggregate. The brilliant Argentine smashed home a left-foot strike from 20 yards before Pedro slotted home after a square ball across goal from Yaya Toure. Messi then collected a neat flick, turned and found the net from distance. Jens Lehmann saved a Messi header, but could not stop Bojan Krkic from slotting home from the edge of the box.

Gourcuff gave Bordeaux an early lead with his 2nd goal of the season
In the other UCL match, Bordeaux survived a late Olympiakos comeback to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League as both sides were reduced to 10-men. Yoann Gourcuff whipped an angled free-kick into the top corner after only four minutes to give Bordeaux the lead. Olympiakos had Matt Derbyshire sent off while Bordeaux’s Alou Diarra was also dismissed, both for two yellow cards. Konstantinos Mitroglou’s fierce strike put the Greek side back in the tie but Marouane Chamakh’s header sealed it. The Greek side’s frustrations boiled over in the game’s aftermath, with centre-back Olof Mellberg sent off after the match had finished.
